Client: Department of Youth, Women and Child Safety
Role: Design, Illustration, Art Direction
The National Redress is a response to the Royal Commission into institutional child sexual abuse. The project was created with survivors social and emotional well-being at the forefront and as a result it was decided that illustration and animation would be the most appropriate way to show that sensitive information. Every stage of the project was created working collaboratively with Larrakia, Wardaman and Karajarri artist and designer Jenna Lee from concept through to delivery.
With such a sensitive subject and important message, the creative concept was built around two simple devices that would deliver the information in a safe and clear way. A blanket to represent the Redress, and the secondary device of the thread to represent the persons journey.
We chose the image of the blanket and thread because a thread is continuous, regardless of what happens. It is something that can be mended, tied together and make something new such as a a blanket that can provide comfort moving forward.
Two different animations were created one cultural, one inclusive to make sure that the correct information was being delivered to the correct audience.
Through extensive consultation with National Redress and research throughout the process to ensure that this message would reach the audience without impacting the viewers well-being.
